The game of ultimate frisbee has been around since 1967. It was started on a university campus while a group of students were hanging out. Frisbee was already commonly played there and they wanted to make it more competitive for their own entertainment. One of these original students soon transferred to a university in Lafayette and taught the friends that he met there the game thereby starting the spread of Ultimate Frisbee.

Colleges started to compete against each other in Ultimate Frisbee in the year of 1972. In the early days of the university competitions, there weren’t a lot of teams, but the trend continued and grew. Shortly after in the year 1975, more than 20 teams were competing against each other. By 1979 things had grown so much that regions were drawn so that teams could play against those locally. The best tems would be allowed at the end to compete to see who was the best team of  the year.

Although it was very popular amongst college students, they are not the only individuals who were playing. By 1976 there were clubs all over the place, especially warm areas such as California and Florida. It became a regualr thing to come across individuals playing ultimate frisbee on the beaches while taking advantage of the beautiful climate. These games came to be very popular among spectators too as it was very competitive and they loved to acquire out who would come out on top.

It wasn’t long after this, in the year 1980 to be exact, that an association of players was put together known as the Untimate Players Association. The many separate teams that wanted to play and take part in Ultimate Frisbee were recognized by this association. Official ultimate frisbee rules were also set up by this organization by which were implemented by all of the teams and games hosted by them. The winners from these regional games would move on to the final round. The association would then recognize the winning team as national Ultimate Frisbee champions.

Today, Ultimate frisbee can be found spread out around the globe. The greatest popularity of the sport can still be found at the university level. Competitions between clubs is still quite popular and you can locate many clubs around the nation still. Many grade schools and high schools are introducing the sport to students in physical education courses as well. Because of these early introductions to the game, many of the students develop a real interest in and a love for the sport. As these kids age, they have a tendency to move into university level frisbee, or move into playing ultimate frisbee with local clubs.
